Allegro mosso The sonata was written in 1901 when Rachmaninov was 28 years old and emerging from an artistic crisis after the disastrous reception of his first symphony. His recent experiences conducting a variety of operas opened his mind to wider influences than that of the recently deceased Tchaikovsky, and he re-embarked on a composer's career with the Suite op 17 for two pianos, the second piano concerto op 18 and the cello sonata, which share a blend of melancholy and triumph and all of which he performed himself with much welcome success. Maria's cello was made in Venice around 1730 by Carlo Tononi; the Steinway was built in Hamburg in 1939 and restored by Klavierhaus Klavins in Bonn in 2007.
