When we booked this trip, Jackie was especially looking forward to visiting the Anne of Green Gables Heritage Site on Prince Edward Island. We hoped we would see some nice fall foliage on the trip, but guessing when the fall colors will peak is pretty much impossible when planning so far ahead. As things turned out, we pretty much nailed it. Enjoying the beautiful colors along with visiting PEI were the major highlights of the trip. We flew into Boston a day ahead of our embarkation. Our hotel was right in the Seaport area, making transfers quite easy. In fact, Boston offers a free bus service—the “Silver Line”—from the airport to South Station downtown. One of the stops was just a five-minute walk from our hotel! We had an early boarding time for the ship, so we joined our traveling companions, Jim and Phyllis, for a leisurely lunch in the buffet. Throughout the trip, we found the food on the ship to be good, although I found myself wishing for a better low-carb selection. Everyone else loved all the fresh-baked bread and, especially, the excellent desserts. We ate in the main dining room most nights. Our waiters were great and took very good care of us. Brilliance is an older ship, and if you look around, you can see that. However, she seems to be aging gracefully. There are lots of interesting venues to enjoy. We thought the variety of music was pretty good—ranging from pop vocals to jazz to classical. The men’s a cappella group, Edge Effect, was a lot of fun. Our cabin was an ocean-view room on Deck Four. It’s an interesting spot. Just through the doors to our hallway was the floor of the atrium, which fills the central part of the ship. There was music, dance, and exercise classes going on there a good part of the time. Also, a few steps away was the entrance to the main dining room—also on that same deck. The room itself was fairly small but featured a very big window with nice views. The bathroom was small, and the shower was really small. Still, it all did the job, and we slept well. The room was quiet, which is a bit surprising considering its close proximity to so much activity! Day 1: A sea day. We like sea days a lot. Day 2: Halifax, NS. We had intentionally chosen to just stay in the port area. There’s lots to see along the waterfront. We browsed some of the shops, took photos of the many statues and monuments, and enjoyed the sunny fall day. Day 3: Sydney, NS. We rented a car and drove a ways up the Cabot Trail. The scenery was breathtaking. We had managed to hit the peak fall colors at exactly the right time. We took a million photos. Day 4: Charlottetown, PEI. We rented another car and headed out of town to visit the Anne of Green Gables Heritage Site. Jackie and Phyllis had a wonderful time visiting the house and grounds featured in the books and films. The great fall foliage continued, and we enjoyed a walk through the Haunted Wood made famous in the story. We also stopped off at Cows Creamery to enjoy some of Canada’s best ice cream. Day 5: Another relaxing sea day. Day 6: Saint John, NB. We headed out to explore some of the nearby shopping. Saint John is very hilly, but we found a Skywalk that routes you via escalators and elevators to higher ground. We checked out the city market, then walked down the hill back toward the port, stopping off for some Tim Hortons coffee along the way. We also tried a Canadian treat called a Beaver Tail. It’s fried dough that comes with a variety of toppings. It was very good, and we highly recommend it. Day 7: Our cruise came to an end. Disembarkation was a bit of a chore—we stood in line for about 20–30 minutes. From there, we took a taxi back to the airport and picked up a rental car. We drove out of Boston, south into Rhode Island. Traffic was often stop-and-go until we were well south of the city. We then drove state highways west across Rhode Island, enjoying once again some beautiful, colorful scenery. Day 8: All good things must come to an end. We flew out of Hartford to Houston via Baltimore. It was a long travel day, and we were glad to get home. We loved our cruise to Canada and highly recommend it to you!
