Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli | Book Summary

The story revolves around the legendary Jeffrey "Maniac" Magee, whose history is a mix of fact and legend. Jeffrey arrives in Two Mills, a racially divided town (East End is black, West End is white). He first befriends Amanda Beale, a girl who carries her library (a valuable suitcase of books, including an encyclopedia volume) with her. When the book is ripped by the bully Mars Bar, Amanda defends Jeffrey. Jeffrey stays with Amanda's family (the Beales) until he leaves to protect them from harassment caused by his presence in the East End. He later finds a mentor in Grayson, an old man who teaches him baseball skills and eventually learns to read from the books Jeffrey buys cheaply at the library. Jeffrey writes Grayson a book called The Man Who Struck Out Willie Mays. After Grayson’s death, Jeffrey runs away again, ending up staying in the bison pen at the zoo. Eventually, Amanda finds him and "commands" him to come home, ensuring he finally has a permanent place to belong.
