In the New Testament, we are told that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable ….”. Believers have read the scriptures in many different places: their homes, on public transportation, outside in nature, in hospitals, during church services, and even in the trenches of the battlefield. However, one Christian hymn had its beginnings in a rather unconventional and unexpected location. C. Austin Miles was born in Lakehurst, New Jersey in January of 1868. As a young man, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. In 1892, he felt prompted to change professions, abandoning dispensing medicine for a career as a gospel song writer. His first hymn, “List! ‘Tis Jesus’ Voice,” was published by the Hall-Mack Company, where he accepted employment. Austin Miles worked there as an editor and manager for the next 37 years. Austin’s hobby was photography. He built his own darkroom for developing film from the pictures he took with his camera. Special red lighting was used in a darkroom, and as he moved the paper images from one tray of chemicals to the next, he had down time waiting for the developing process to finish. He discovered he could read his Bible in the special lighting. As a musician and songwriter, this was a perfect location for uninterrupted study, with the purpose of getting ideas for new Christian songs. One day in March 1912, while waiting for the process to finish on a batch of pictures, Austin began reading in the twentieth chapter of John in the New Testament. It was the story after the Savior’s crucifixion, when Mary Magdalene came to the garden to visit the tomb of Jesus and found the sepulcher empty. Austin had a spiritual experience as he seemed to become an observer to the scene. He was watching from the entrance to the garden, and was a silent witness as he saw Mary look into the empty tomb, the disciples John and Peter depart after finding their Lord’s body was gone, and the moment Mary recognized Jesus and cried, “Rabbonni!” Austin reported that his consciousness returned to the here and now of the darkroom, where he was gripping his Bible with muscles tense. In telling of the experience he said, “Under the inspiration of this vision, I wrote as quickly as the words could be formed, [writing] the poem exactly as it had appeared. That same evening, I wrote the music.” He called the song, “In the Garden”. Throughout his lifetime, Austin Miles wrote the lyrics for at least 400 gospel songs. The hymn he is most remembered for – the one which was conceived in a photography darkroom – and published in 249 hymnals, is “In the Garden”. He once said: "It is as a writer of gospel songs I am proud to be known, for in that way I may be of the most use to my Master, whom I serve willingly, although not as efficiently as is my desire." I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses, And the voice I hear falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses. (Chorus) He speaks and the sound of His voice, Is so sweet the birds hush their singing, And the melody that he gave to me, Within my heart is ringing. (Chorus) I stayed in the garden with Him Though the night all around me is falling But he bids me go, through the voice of woe His voice to me is calling. Chorus: And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own, And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other, has ever known!
