Emmeline Pankhurst, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. They are all icons of civil resistance (or disobedience if you prefer). But what is civil resistance and why is it a special form of political action? The term ‘resistance’ gets bandied about a lot in contemporary politics, but it seems to get misapplied in a lot of circumstances.
