Dr. Kapil Mishra, Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine, provides an expert overview of uveal melanoma, the most common primary eye cancer in adults. Uveal melanoma develops in the uvea—the middle layer of the eye that includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid—and can be difficult to detect in its early stages due to its location and lack of symptoms. In this video, Dr. Mishra explains what causes uveal melanoma, how it's diagnosed through eye exams and imaging, and the latest treatment options, including radiation therapy (such as plaque brachytherapy), surgery, and emerging targeted therapies. He also discusses the importance of early detection and ongoing monitoring, as uveal melanoma can spread to other parts of the body, most commonly the liver. Learn how UC Irvine’s School of Medicine is advancing eye cancer care through research, innovation, and a multidisciplinary approach to ocular oncology.
