This is the halfway point of the canal at Church kirk on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in the heart of Lancashire. This area was stacked with mills, coal mines, printers, foundries, bleach works, tallow works, paint works in such a small village of less than 5,000 people population. The site had an explosion in 1917 which blew up the village and many church windows had to be replaced. The old site was called Tom Knitter bleach works and Cote Holme works where Lancelot Blythe where making a very explosive chemical called pitric acid and also storing T.N.T. Luckily as a fire caught hold he closed a storeroom door where the tnt was and stopped it exploding. But the village was badly damaged from the initial explosion. The church windows where blown out and many more including factories badly damaged and the village was closed.
