A peek into the historical Ballari fort located at Ballari city in the state of Karnataka. This fort sits upon a huge monolithic rock. It was a climb of close to 500 steps most of which are ruined and broken. Ballari fort is one of the lesser explored historical forts of India. It was once ruled by the Nayaka rulers who acted as the subsidiary kings to the Vijaynagara empire. Later this fort was captured by Hyder Ali who again made major changes to the fort and also constructed the lower part of the fort. The fort has two divisions the upper fort which was built by the Nayaka ruler Hanumappa Nayaka and the lower fort constructed by Hyder Ali who was also the father of Tipu Sultan. Ballari fort is now almost in ruins but once we reached the top of the rock it was quite evident that this place was grand at one time. The upper fort has numerous structures such as the ruins of an old temple, a citadel and some water reservoirs. It took us almost 3 hours to climb up to the top of the rock and explore the fort atop it, but in order to explore every detail of it more time was needed.
