They started a crusade to highlight the works and names of black LGBT artists -- it's called the Black LGBT Project. Photographer Greg McNeal: "My original goal was to create strong, black images to try to balance out the negative images of black males in the media." Painter Shaunte Johnson: "It's about expressing yourself and I think if we don't have that then we're walking around with a void of something." Sculptor Duane Paul: "It's very rare that you find an artist that is gay, black, out... and doing work that speaks to his experiences." seldom that you find....his experiences." The void of same gender loving identified artists has inspired members of the greater Hollywood art community to start a national movement called "THE BLACK LGBT PROJECT." C. Jerome Wood, Founder of The Black LGBT Project: "The inspiration was my people, myself looking into the mirror. Seeing people passing and living and often time being pushed to the side -- marginalized (as many people say). In addition, hiding themselves. The goal of the movement is to document the lives and contributions of black LGBT artists and their significant others. Jerome: "All of you here are participants, you need to go you're your closets, go into your garages, find some materials, give me some history. This must be archived." "I really want to see the lives expressed in visual and performance art. I want the material to be archived. I think it's very important that we have documentation. We have voices. We have skills and the ability and I think we first and foremost should recognize each other and acknowledge each other. And that's my motivation."
