Unlike dogs, there is no exact standard for the size of cats. However, cats that are larger than adult cats, which are usually 4-5 kg, are often called large cats. On average, large cats weigh about 5-8 kg, and even larger ones can weigh up to 11-12 kg. Large cats grow more slowly than normal-sized cats. Usually, cats reach full development when they are 12-18 months old, but large cats take an average of 3 years and can sometimes take up to 5 years max. 1. Ragdoll Ragdoll cats’ name literally comes from the word “ragdoll.” They got the name because their personality is very gentle and calm, and their legs hang like a doll when owners hold them. Overseas, ragdolls are often called not just puppy-cats, but simply puppies because they are so charming and full of love for their owners. Also, ragdolls tend to be a bit lazy, so they are not as active. They are not very thorough with grooming either and rather than resting in the bread posture which cats often do, ragdolls often roll on the floor or lie down. Ragdolls do not shed as much because they do not have inner hair. However, they should still be brushed 2-3 times a week as their thin and long hair can easily get tangled. 2. Maine Coon While the exact origin of Maine Coons is unknown, they are known to have naturally originated from Maine in the northern United States. Maine Coons used to catch mice on farms, barns, and homes, and later came to be loved as domestic cats. Considered one of the largest amongst big cats, Maine Coons are nicknamed “Gentle Giants” as they are not only obedient but also sociable and gentle. Maine Coons often have polydactyly, which means that they have an extra toe. Polydactylism is a disease in which there are 1-2 more extra toes due to genetic mutation. However, in the case of Maine Coon, the dominant gene causes polydactyly. Cats with polydactyly only have a slightly larger paw and there are no other health problems. 3. Norwegian Forest Cat Norwegian forest cats are intelligent, adapt quickly to their surroundings, and are mild-tempered puppy-cats who get along well with humans. Norwegian forest cats originated from the Scandinavian Peninsula which includes Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, and the cat breed has been seen throughout the history of the region. Norwegian forest cats have often appeared in Norse mythology or folk tales. Particularly in the Nordic mythology, they were described as giant cats pulling the carriage of the “Goddess Freyja,” a symbol of love and beauty. Norwegian forest cats have rich and dense fur, like most cats from cold Northern Europe. As such, they are highly vulnerable to heat stroke and can shed a lot of hair. Therefore, regular brushing is essential.
