Culebra is a municipality of Puerto Rico that covers the entire surface of the island of the same name. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 1,792. Originally, after colonization, the island was called Isla Pasaje and San Ildefonso de la Culebra. It is located 27 kilometers east of the Isla Grande of Puerto Rico (main island), 14 kilometers north of the island-municipality of Vieques, and 19 kilometers west of St. Thomas. It has an estimated area of 437.27 km², of which 30.16 km² correspond to mainland and 407.11 km² are water. Today, Culebra has 19 beaches and a freshwater trench, which is famous for the number of tourists who visit it. Culebra is mainly known as "Cradle of the Borincano Sun", "Isla Chiquita" and "Last Virgin", and its residents are called Culebrenses. Playa Flamenco is a beach resort on the Isla de Culebra, in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Flamenco is located on the north coast of Culebra. The beach stretches for a mile around a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay. The beach is bordered by the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, which is itself one of the oldest wildlife preserves within the US Fish and Wildlife Service unit. Off the coast of Flamenco, about a quarter of a mile, is a rock.
