(15 May 2016) In a throw-back to Soviet times, more than a hundred children with red ties marched in Moscow's Red Square on Sunday. The dream of Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov to restore the Young Pioneers youth movement - the Soviet analogue of the American boy scouts - came true in 2001 when the pioneers marched in the Red Square for the first time. Since then, the ceremony, during which the 10-year old children join the Communist-backed youth movement, takes place on the Moscow Red Square every year. Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov on Sunday personally tied the red scarves around the necks of new pioneers. The Young Pioneers organisation was first established in the 1930s to help raise the younger generation in the spirit of Communist ideas, but almost disappeared in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
