Tips to Alleviate Back Pain on Your Road Trip| Dr. G. Balamurali A lot of us travel, don't we? How many hours do we travel? IT professionals who go for jobs in OMR and ECR, spend 4 hours travelling alone. A lot of you ride a bike, isn't it? So you travel approximately 2 hours on the bike. There is no problem with the bike. Many people ask if they should stop riding the bike and if that will solve the problem. There is no problem with the bike. The problem is with the road. When there are pot holes on the road, your spine jerks every time you ride or drive on it, the spine moves. That is what causes a lot of damage. So in our lifestyle there is a lot of trauma, everyday trauma. Lifting weight wrongly causes trauma. Sitting in the wrong position causes trauma. If someone hits us suddenly on our back, or if we jump and have a fall, or if you did your exercises or did your physical workouts wrongly when lifting weights in the gym, lifting the weights in the wrong way or exercising the wrong way, at all those times, there would be small damages caused to the spine. If these small damages continue for a span of 10 to 20 years, it would cause problems in the spine. If you consider women, they do household work. Many people would ask you to do exercises. They would say, "doctor, from morning till evening, I do all the household work". “I sweep, mop, take care of the children, wash clothes”. and in addition to cleaning the house, you also go for a job. You also have to work there, also stand there and you also sit there. But all this is not good for your back; bending, lifting weight and sweeping; all these cause injury to the back. We are not in the right position. We do not stand at the right height and cook. When we wash vessels or wash clothes, we do not do it from the right height. We do it in the wrong position and cause damage to the spine. What should you do to rectify this damage? You would have to do exercises. You need to keep your back bone strong. You have to keep your muscles strong. If that is strong, you can do all your work. There would be no problem. But without doing the exercises, if you do household work, there would be problems. The same applies for men. They ride the bike a lot and have to travel a lot and lots of other things that can cause damage to the spine. Smoking and alcohol is injurious to the health and specifically to the lungs, kidney and liver. But then, disc, ligaments and muscles also become very weak for smokers and drinkers. Similarly the position in which you sit. A lot of you work on the computer. So to work on the computer, you have to be in the right position. Lot of us use laptops a lot these days. When children or your family members use the laptop they would be lying down, or use the laptop on the sofa or dining table. They would be in all the places using the laptop. All that is extremely wrong. Laptop is actually not designed to be placed on the lap. That name itself is wrong. The computer should be at the right height. if the computer is not at the sufficient height, you could use a few books or boxes to increase the height and place the computer on that. It should be in line with your eyesight. Then the usage of cellphones. Half of the time our head is in a tilted position. If you see on the road, that is how people are. Cellphones are very important. But if you spend an hour everyday in such a position, in a span of ten years, how many hours would you spend in that position? While remaining in that position, unless your neck muscles are very strong. Your neck muscles will cause disc problems in the neck. So all this is very very important.
