Biswabrata Goswami KRISHNAGAR, 25 SEP: There seems to be no end to corrupt practices among some of the police officers in the country. In the latest, a police officer posted in Chapra police station in Nadia has been accused for demanding Rs 1 lakh bribe from the family members of a criminal, who is currently in jail custody. The police officer Chandan Saha who demanded money from the family members of the criminal named Dabir Halsana, promised not to take further action against the suspected criminal and to resolve the cases lodged against him. Saha also threatened the family members and Saddam, brother of Dabir Halsana on dire consequences if they failed to pay the bribe on time. Saddam’s wife Nishina Khatoon alleged the accused police officer raided her house when Saddam informed him that it was impossible to pay money to him. The police officer, Saha in the name of investigation has taken away all valuable documents including the original documents of Aadhar cards, voter cards, ration cards, property documents and even the original receipt copies of ornament loans. During the raid, he even vandalized her house, she alleged. She also alleged that the police officer threatened her if they do not give the bribe amount to him, he will not return the documents to them. The accused police officer also conducted raids in the houses of their relatives and threatened them to pay the amount to him which he demanded. Worried on the malpractices in the name of police action, the Halsana family filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court against Saha recently. On Thursday, when Saddam was returning home after meeting his brother Dabir who was produced before the Krishnagar District Judge’s court, was detained by Saha at Srinagar More in Chapra and he was taken to the police station. The police officer also threatened him for filing petition in the High Court against him. He then included him in a theft case, said Biswadeb Tamta, a defence lawyer. Mr Tamta also said Saddam was produced before the court in Krishnagar where the magistrate on hearing pleas remanded him in police custody for two days. The magistrate also called the accused police officer and rebuked him for his activities, said Mr Tamta. Meanwhile, Saddam’s family members have lodged complaints with SP, Krishnagar Police District and other top state police officials urging them to take action against the police officer, Chandan Saha who illegally demanded bribes from them. A senior police officer of Chapra police station, however, argued in favour of Saha saying that Dabir was involved in series of theft cases and the looted money was kept in the house of Saddam. So, the investigating police officer conducted raids at Saddam’s house. He, however, didn’t say anything about the bribe money which Saha had demanded. Ms Ishani Paul, SP, Krishnagar Police District, when asked, said, “I have received a complaint and we are conducting a probe into this matter.
