Cognitive flexibility - when we adapt our decision making to a changing environment. Have you ever ordered your favourite meal at a restaurant and they have ran out, how did you choose another plate? Waiting for a bus and it is suddenly cancelled, how did you react? Neuroscientists, like myself, can study this type of decision making in an experiment called the reversal learning task, because it can tell us how the brain updates the value of different choices. It is probably more like gambling in a casino. If you have 5 slot machines in a row, which one do you choose? At first, it is a random choice, but what if you keep losing, do you change to another machine? What if you are on a winning streak, do you stay, or try the others? And what happens when the machine secretly switches (the reversal) from letting you winning, to forcing you to fail? How long until you change your tactics. In the above animation, we don't have people, we have Bongo, and we don't have Bongo winning money, only sugar, but the same rules apply. If you like this animation, I have more on my website, along with other neuroscience content. YouTube won't let me link the website, but the address is.... aneurorevolution.com
