Antonín Leopold Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 13 was composed after he returned to his motherland, Czech, after spending three years working at the National Conservatory of Music of America. He was filled with joy upon returning to his home country. The two string quartets he composed during this time had become the twin stars among his chamber music pieces. After a life of wandering in a foreign land, his understanding of the music of his people has deepened to a new level. The String Quartet No. 13 is the type of masterpiece that stays with you forever. Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Quintet in B-flat major was originally composed for clarinet and string quartet. However, the frequent substitution of a string orchestra for the string quartet in concerts makes this work sound more like a clarinet concerto. This piece was composed for Berman, a famous German clarinetist. Through the music, we can get a sense of Berman’s virtuosity and the sincere friendship between the two musicians. In the second half of the concert, we present to our audience Arnold Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht.” This piece was young Schoenberg’s debut into the world, and at the same time, symbolizing the passing of romanticism and the rise of modernism. But, more importantly, it is by itself a beautiful chamber music masterpiece.
