In the field with the Animal Tracking Facility

We were lucky enough to spend a day in the field with the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility, one of eleven facilities within Australia's Integrated Marine Observing System. The team, who are based here at SIMS, headed out to service their Bondi line of receiver units which detect tagged animals as they move past Sydney. This technology means that many of Australia's marine species can now be tracked in real-time and provides data that will help to improve our understanding of migratory species including fish, sharks and mammals. With this information, we will see better management of Australia's fisheries and more accurately assess the effects of climate change, ocean acidification and other physical changes that affect animals within the marine environment.
