"Yellowcake": Uranium Mining, Boom and Bust, Stories from New Mexico Route 66
One of America's first federal highways, Route 66 passed through eight states from Chicago, Illinois to California. Travelers who drove it encountered new places, faces and cultures. Those living along it also experienced the same. Nowhere was this more evident than in New Mexico, a land of many cultures. One of the towns along NM66 is Grants, a town with a history closely tied to uranium mining. This video tells the colorful story of that industry, and how its boom and bust changed Grants and the neighboring Laguna Pueblo community. This program is one of a series produced for use in New Mexico classrooms. Funded by 302 Stories and the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
