I'm so excited to finally share this Raising Neem-Roonis interview with @azadeh.shams.29 , a toy designer living in Milan, Italy, and specializing in raising bilingual kids. Azadeh has two half Iranian children, aged 2 and 6, and is raising them to be fluent in Persian, German and Italian. She has a very respectful approach to keeping children interested in languages, and is adamant that true learning happens through communication and love, not through didactic 'teaching'. This conversation is a must-listen not only for anyone raising bilingual children, but for anyone interested in learning a second language (which is all of us, right?). I had so many questions for her about my own situation, raising two half Iranian boys in the United States. She said some interesting statics- that while in the world, the majority of people are bilingual, in the US, only 20% are. So the fact that second languages are not valued in the US makes it especially challenging, along with the fact that English is the language of dominance and power here. Azadeh's approach is to speak exclusively in her mother tongue to her children- in her case, Persian. That is the language she feels most 'herself'. She doesn't force or even tell her children to respond to her in Persian- this happens naturally because their relationship with her is now tied to the Persian language. Why are second languages important? Azadeh says that each language is a window from which you can view the world- knowing different languages gives you access to a whole new range of emotions and human experiences- the reason we are all alive on this earth!
