While North Vietnamese forces were surrounding Saigon in April 1975, its communist ally Khmer Rouge seized power in neighbouring Cambodia. But the allies soon turned into enemies. As the world remembers the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, a lesser-known but pivotal chapter is being revisited. In April 1975, while North Vietnamese troops encircled Saigon, the Khmer Rouge seized control of Cambodia. Although both regimes shared communist ideologies, tensions soon erupted on the border. Within four years, Vietnam invaded Cambodia to oust the genocidal Khmer Rouge, ending their reign, but after a decade in the country, some viewed it as a new occupation.
