(1 Mar 1973) RR7309A SOUTH VIETNAM: THE DEBRIS OF WAR At Ho Nai, 20 miles from Saigon, is the biggest scrapyard in the world, 450 acres of junk discarded by the Americans as they left Vietnam. Ruined tanks, trucks, jeeps and armoured personnel carriers lie cheek by jowl with pin tables, juke boxes, television sets, electric refrigerators, mobile homes, all of which give a fascinating insight into the American way of military life. In Saigon, the American presence is fading from the city. The black market, the bar girls, the clubs are no longer doing such a lucrative trade. Meanwhile, South Vietnam is beginning to address itself to the task of economic reconstruction. The war left the country with many technical resources and much foreign capital, especially Japanese, which may be used to build up new industries. There is also the problem of human reconstruction. In this report, we visit South Vietnam's only hospital for plastic surgery where children suffering from war injuries and the effects of malnutrition are receiving treatment.
