CONCERTO “MARE NOSTRUM” FOR GUITAR AND ORCHESTRA OP.78 PARTS: 00:00 - I. Allegro amabile 09:58 - II. Lento semplice 18:26 - III. Allegro deciso Àlex Garrobé, guitar. Salvador Brotons, conductor. Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona Nacional de Catalunya. Written during the Summer of 1999 basically between Barcelona, the Balearic Islands and the Costa Brava. The “Mare Nostrum” concerto features the intense Mediterranean light, and it transmits through the gentle, but at the same time instense strings of the guitar, the brilliant blue color of our sea and sky, the freshness of out land and the aromatic perfume of our plants. It had been for a long time that my guitarist friends were insisting me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. I had always been looking forward to that opportunity, but it was necessary to find the appropriate occasion to finally start the piece. My friend, an excellent guitarist, Àlex Garrobé proposed to premiere the piece in the Guitar Festival of Lublin (Poland) under my conducting, which was a determinant factor to start writing a piece. To compose any concerto is always a challenge, but to write a Concerto for guitar is perhaps even more so. The balance between the soloist and the orchestra, to highlight the technique and expressive possibilities of the guitar, and to achieve the appropriate contrast in a piece of such length with an instrument as the guitar of limited acoustical power, has been one of the most difficult challenges. The Mediterranean flavor is present throughout the whole concerto using several Catalan folk melodies, a havanera (imported from Cuba but very popular in the whole iberian-mediterranean coast), broad lyricism, variety of instrumental colors, delicate and sometimes agitated rhythms, and the use of a language sometimes openly tonal. The first movement follows a sonata form. The first theme, lyric and expansive is based on a modified version of the folk song Sant Ramon which is introduced by the soloist. Later, also the guitar presents the second theme in the low register under a syncopated accompaniment of the orchestra. In the development section is curios to note the colorful dialogue between the guitar and the percussion. After a shorter reexposition and a cadenza of the soloist, the orchestra emerges with an expansive “tutti” to progressively go down to the inicial ambience. The second movement is a pleasant “Interlude” based on two popular songs: “El Mariner”, beautiful, gentle, and tonal, and “La Mala Nova”, more sad, intimate, introvert and modal. After their individual presentation and development, the two songs are combined, the first is taken by the orchestra in the high register, and the second by the guitar forming an interesting symbiosis between bimodality and sounds play. Tenderness and peace in one hand, and agitation and instability on the other. The last movement opens rhythmically with a modified version of the popular song “Mariagneta”. The movement is decisive, vibrant and virtuosistic for the guitar. The second theme presents continuous rhythmical changes which give to the music great vitality. The central part is totally based on the havanera “La Barqueta” presented in a somewhat exotic color by the percussion. After a modified reexposition, a rhythmic-textural long gradation starts to prepare a brilliant and exciting ending.
