By 1944, the Sherman was everywhere — from Normandy’s hedgerows to the fields of Northern Italy. But not all Shermans were created equal. The British fitted theirs with a powerful 17-pounder gun and called it the Firefly — a tank killer born from necessity. The Americans refined theirs into the M4A3E8 “Easy Eight,” adding better suspension, armor, and a faster, smoother ride. Both tanks came to represent two different answers to the same problem: how to make the Sherman survive — and win — against German armor.
