Dr. Matthew Bassan is a specialist in musculoskeletal medicine with Atlantic Medical Group’s Ortho-Care Wayne. He cares for adults with acute injuries and chronic joint or back pain by using nonsurgical modalities such as steroid injections and lubrication injections for knee arthritis – as well as medications, bracing, and physical therapy – to reduce pain and promote healing. Fellowship-trained in sports medicine with nearly a decade of clinical experience in nonsurgical orthopedic care, Dr. Bassan has lectured on topics that include alternatives to opioid treatment, knee arthritis, rotator cuff injuries, and the physiologic effects of exercise. He teaches at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City and has served as team physician for Long Island University Post’s football, wrestling, lacrosse and basketball teams. After graduating as a doctor of osteopathic medicine from Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Bassan completed a residency in family medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital, receiving board certification in family medicine. He then pursued a sports medicine fellowship at North Shore-LIJ Plainview Hospital. Learning Objectives: Distinguish and define the subcategories of exercise: aerobic vs. anaerobic exercise, and cardiovascular vs. strength training/exercise. Discuss the physiologic effects of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism and exercise, including the effects on the cardiovascular system, the effects on the skeletomuscular system, and changes in heart rate, cardiac output, and stroke volume. Discuss the benefits of each subcategory of exercise and explain how a combination of these subcategories will provide the greatest spectrum of health benefits.
