We just learned that LA Clippers superstar Kawhi Leonard will undergo surgery to “repair a partially torn ACL” that occurred in game 4 vs the Utah Jazz. The partial tear description means this was very likely a grade 2 moderate of the anterior cruciate ligament, ACL. Typically, if a partial tear is operated on, the ligament is reconstructed the same way it would be for a grade 3 full rupture of the ligament. There is a new technique where partial tears are repaired using an internal brace but these come with a significantly higher risk of re-injury, as high as 20% in some studies. I’d be very surprised if Kawhi, his camp, and the Clippers would be comfortable with that increase in risk. Assuming a reconstruction, Kawhi is looking at near a 9 month return to sport timeline and then even longer to actually reach pre-injury performance leves - I typically look at the 2nd season back following an ACL as a more true indicator. Further, this adds another insult to his lower body as he’s been dealing with patellar tendon issues on both knees for the past few years. A recent comparison example is Spencer Dinwidde who had a partial tear of the ACL with initial reports stating he had a repair of the ACL which turned out to be a reconstruction. He was cleared for return to basketball activities in 6 months but then it takes 2 or so months from that point to actually return to sport. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
