This short experimental 360 immersive film was created with the support of the Screen Cornwall Immersive Innovation Programme, Real Immersive in Plymouth and Sam Stone Writer’s script editing skills. It serves as a proof-of-concept demonstration, combining various new and established creative processes, layered into a unique and engaging immersive visual experience. The story was inspired by Clare Howdle - ‘Little Lights’ ‘ Twelve Stories for Twelve Sections’ by Cornwall National Landscape, published by Hermitage Press. Soundtrack - ‘Autumn Comes’ by Melodrama - Motion Array. The film can be viewed using a mobile device to explore the 360 environment or by using a compatible VR headset. Its aspect ratio was dictated by the specification of the realideas.org Dome at the Market Hall in Plymouth, 360 horizontal x 210 vertical, edited in 8k x 4k equirectangular format. All aspects of the films production were handled by myself, including the 360 filming, volumetric asset capture, green screen filming and keying, editing and post production. 'Cleanup' was required for all 360 footage, removing camera operator and other unwanted people, resulting in a clean 360 plate ready for layering and editing. Big thanks go to Sam Stone, Tania Diez and Alli Marshall for all their help and support. Using low-cost hardware and low-cost and open-source software, the film explores the potential of creating 360 live action through a ‘mixed media’ approach. This involves filming live-action actors against a 'pop-up' green screen, capturing 360 spherical environments on a fixed tripod and using photogrammetry in the form of ‘gaussian splats’ to create near-ground assets such as foliage, sand dunes, buildings and walls etc. Post-production saw each shot assembled using this library of assets. Foreground action was layered onto near-ground surfaces and structures, layered onto background environments and skies. Furthermore, all camera movement was generated in post-production, giving immense scope for experimenting with building scene content and layout, then directing camera movements appropriate to the action. Though some technical limitations were found when generating 360 ‘rendered’ environments, new developments in image visualisation techniques and additional experimentation with filming more involved live action, should result in significantly improved visual quality moving forward. Shot breakdown:- Shot 1 - Introduction - 360 live action of railway bridge. Shot 2 - Narrator on beach - Gaussian splat garden on 360 live action.
