Woohoo! It's video #8 (out of 13) inside Variety 101! Hi 👋 I'm Dr. Taylor and I am so glad you are here! If you are just joining in, please head to the course homepage (playlist) and start from the beginning. And don't forget to scroll down for some key points from this video and your homework. VARIETY 101 (FREE COURSE playlist here👇) • Variety 101 Key Points: • Sensory needs can have a HUGE impact on feeding • You may need to take this portion of the course SLOW for kids who are sensitive to textures • The four key features of successful food play: include a new (or not preferred) food, include a familiar object or food, keep it positive and low pressure, modify for your child's sensory needs • Incorporate something your child is working on (texture, smell, etc) into the sensory or play experience • Art food play - making pictures or sculptures with food on a plate or painting and stamping with foods (usually fruits or veggies work best here), writing your name with beets on a paper plate • Building - using just food, or food and toothpicks → make towers, structures, or use for stacking games • Sensory bins - use a sensory base (like noodles, water, whipped cream, applesauce, etc) alone OR paired with a food they are working on. Add in scoops, tongs, bowls, containers, etc and encourage free play and exploration. • Imaginative play - restaurant play where they make your meal, feeding their plastic dinosaurs, pretending to be an animal, eat in a bowl on the floor like a puppy, how many carrot people can float in your bell pepper boat in a bowl of water?, “Fishing” with carrot sticks and hummus for goldfish • Games - blind taste testing different color carrots to guess which color it is, smoothie judges to pick moms best new smoothie recipe, how many cucumber slices can stick to your face, guess the food just by smelling it, pattern play with arranging berries • Silly - snack time where you can’t use your hands, feed mom • MODIFY the activity for your child's needs and comfort levels (i.e. gloves, not at the kitchen table, with a friend, etc) • Also try non-food sensory play such as shaving cream on the shower walls, kinetic sand, play dough, etc • Make sure to SUPERVISE all activities and avoid using choking hazards in play with young kids Homework: • Identify what texture or sensation your child struggles with the most • Pick ONE activity that will help you expose your child to this new texture (or smell, etc) • Try this activity this upcoming week in a low pressure setting and see what they think!
