What does the immediate future have in store for my DVD overview channel after I finish my runthrough of the Phineas and Ferb DVDs in my collection? Well, since making those P&F videos have put me in the right mood to do so, I'll be spending the next few weeks showcasing the DVDs I have of all the OTHER television shows produced by Disney to celebrate Disney Channel's 40th anniversary on April 18, 2023! I am going through all my collection in the order in which the shows featured on them made their television premiere, divided into three categories: Disney Television Animation productions, live-action Disney shows, and programs not made by Disney that aired in most countries on and are widely associated with Disney’s networks. It's sure to be a MAGICALLY good time! Ready to die of boredom because of a lack of new content from this channel? Not today, Zurg! Yep, everybody’s favorite animated spaceman, Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise, is here with his overlooked gang of lovably offbeat teammates as we cover the underappreciated 1 Saturday Morning classic, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, as the second-to-last destination on our painfully short journey through the DVDs of shows from the aforementioned block! The one and only DVD release of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, titled “The Adventure Begins”, combines the show’s 3-episode pilot into a feature film, with a newly-created opening featuring the Toy Story characters popping in their new VHS copy of the “movie” (weird that they didn’t change it to a DVD for this format’s release of the special) and alternate closing credits, and was put into the market on August 8, 2000, two months ahead of not only the show’s television premiere, but also Toy Story 2’s first home video release. Sadly, there isn’t much of note beyond the three featured episodes themselves, as the disc only contains three kiddie extras that reek of the same pandering that plagued most of the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection discs. Like, come on, Disney: you’re telling me that no other full episodes of the series had been fully produced yet to add value to this release? Adding insult to injury, the “movie” has a NON-ANAMORPHIC widescreen transfer, resulting in the image being both letterboxed and pillarboxed on HD displays instead of filling up the whole screen. This poor transfer might be on account of the fact that the three episodes have merely been cropped from 4x3 dimensions, since Disney Television Animation didn’t make the permanent switch to widescreen for all their new shows until Teacher’s Pet a month later. Ugh. Well, good thing I got this disc at a yard sale for only $1, because I would have felt robbed otherwise. With my rant out of the way, here’s the pitifully short list of everything you’ll find in this overview of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins DVD… 1.) FBI warnings 2.) Walt Disney Home Video logo (1997-2001) 3.) 102 Dalmatians theatrical trailer (AKA how I was first exposed to the Snoop Dog’s perennial classic bop, “Atomic Dog”) 4.) The Tigger Movie VHS and DVD promo 5.) Fantasia 2000 VHS and DVD commercial 6.) Toy Story 2 VHS and DVD ad 7.) DVD menu 8.) Rogues' Gallery Game (which expects you to know all the main villains of the show, even though only two of them can be found in the disc’s feature presentation and the series hadn’t premiered on television yet; with due respect to Mr. T, “I pity the fools who were forced to wildly guess the correct answers to this game’s questions back in August 2000!”) 9.) Buzz Lightyear of Star Command “Digital Comic Book” (DVD Storybook): “The Emperor’s New Throne” (watch for the Disney Adventures magazine plug with some nostalgic Backstreet Boys sightings; perhaps the most amount of fun this disc has beyond its main feature) 10.) Star Command Trivia Game (basically this disc’s equivalent to the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection DVD line’s many games featuring questions pertaining to the film, though this one is made a little more exciting by having the narrator actually read out the questions instead of just letting you know whether or not you got the question right; it doesn’t excuse the flatout recycling of the line that plays if you somehow get all the questions in the game wrong from those Gold Collection supplements, though) 11.) Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Video Game commercial 12.) “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command”: “Coming soon to Disney’s 1 Saturday Morning on ABC and Disney’s 1 Too on UPN” promo 13.) Start of “film” (featuring that newly-created opening I mentioned earlier) No, you didn’t accidentally scroll past anything: that’s literally it. How pathetic. There’s only one more 1 Saturday Morning series that I own on DVD. But before we wrap up that block’s portion of the marathon, however, let’s take a brief detour next time, using the Big Book of Everything as our guide.
