In this edition of Reporters' Notebook, Ariel Waldman of Dark Reading and Eric Geller of Cyber Security Dive discuss the critical security challenges posed by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the enterprise and the policy efforts underway to address them. IoT devices are often inherently insecure, frequently failing to receive necessary vulnerability patches and other updates. Their long-lasting life cycles make them difficult to manage, particularly for legacy devices. Furthermore, a significant problem is that manufacturers often ship these devices with default passwords, and users neglect to change them to more secure options. The difficulty lies in balancing security with usability, as companies often reduce their focus on security to reduce user friction. The discussion also highlights the specific vulnerability of some medical technology (MedTech) IoT devices which may not even require passwords, making them easy targets for cyberattackers.
