Gu Bon-gil is a South Korean right-handed sabre fencer, six-time individual Asian champion, three-time team world champion, and 2012 team Olympic champion. Gu started fencing because of his middle school teacher who told him about this sport. Goo said, "I was told to try out fencing just for a month, but within a month I started improving fast enough to win a bronze medal at the National Youth Sports Festival.” Gu was a member of the first Korean men's team to win an Olympic medal alongside with Jung-Hwan Kim, Eun-Seok Oh and Woo-Young Won. As the team they won gold at the 2012 Games in London. In 2019 he was presented with the Cheongryong [Blue Dragon] Medal, the highest Order of Sport Merit in the Republic of Korea.
