Walton: Concerto for Viola and Orchestra (1929) Frederick Riddle with the London Symphony conducted by William Walton Recorded on December 6, 1937, at Decca's Thames Street Studio, London, on 78-rpm matrices DTA 3393 through 3398; the session was produced by Hubert Foss. First issued in February, 1938, as Decca X 199 through X 201, and later the same year in the USA as Decca Album No. 8 (records 29043 through 29045). The Walton Viola Concerto is in three movements: 1. Andante comodo 2. Vivo, con molto preciso (at 8:03) 3. Allegro moderato (at 12:16) Frederick Riddle (1912-1995) was the principal violist of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1933 to 1938. Although Walton conducted this concerto with such eminent soloists as Lionel Tertis (for whom it was written) and William Primrose (with whom he later recorded it), this interpretation by Riddle, made on Tertis's recommendation, is said to have been his favorite. Walton revised the orchestration of the Concerto in 1962; this recording and the above-mentioned Primrose recording (from 1946) appear to have been the only ones made with the original orchestration.
