Mass Suicide Attempt in India Highlights Deep Divisions Within Transgender Community

A shocking incident in Indore (In-dor), India, has drawn international concern after 24 transgender individuals attempted mass suicide amid an escalating financial and power dispute between rival trans groups. Deputy Commissioner of Police Anand (Aanand) Kaladgi (ka-la-da-gee) informed the media: “We received information about a situation of ruckus at a house in Nandlalpura where transgender persons reside…Our senior officers promptly arrived... 24 people were admitted to the nearby hospital.” All are now stable and receiving treatment. The day after, police arrested rival group leader Sapna Haji (sap-na-ha-jee), also known as Sapna Guru, for assault and extortion. Her associates are also under investigation, with one accused of posing as a journalist to threaten and rape a trans woman. One survivor, Neha Kunwar (Neha-Koon-war), accused Haji of forcing trans members into “bonded labor” for 16 years. She warned, “If the police and administration do not support us, the 300 transgender people in our camp will be forced to commit suicide.” Local officials have urged a full investigation, calling the feud “tarnishing to the city’s image.”
