Current approaches to verbal working memory typically assume a fundamental role of a storage system for retaining phonological (speech sound) information, but emerging evidence suggests the existence of a separate capacity involved in retaining semantic (meaning) information, with different neural networks underlying semantic and phonological working memory. In this talk, Martin discusses the important implications of different neural networks underlying semantic and phonological working memory for methods of testing working memory and for assumptions about how impairments to working memory impact complex cognitive functions. __________________________________ The American Psychological Association is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with more than 118,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students as its members.
