SERMON SUMMARY NOTES Let us suggest seven reasons every Christian should study and appreciate the genealogies of the Bible: (1) They are inspired by the Holy Spirit and valuable and powerful in His hand (2 Tim 3:16-17). (2) They are reminders of God’s faithfulness to all generations (Deut 7:9; Ps 100:5; Mal 3:16; Rev 20:11-15). (3) God knows everyone by name, just like He knows and names the stars (Ps 147:4). (4) Genealogies are an historical account proving God’s sovereignty over all (Deut 32:8; Ps 90:12; 139:16; Acts 17:26). (5) They remind us that death is the inheritance of every son of Adam. (6) We must all be born again or die spiritually for eternity. (7) The genealogies point to Jesus (Lk 3:23-38). I. Enoch Walked with God (Gen 5:18-21). Birth and death are the constant and common connection between everyone, but in Enoch we are introduced to an exception to the rule. Enoch was born and is the first of two people in the Bible said to have walked with God (Gen 6:9). The literal image of walking takes us back to Eden and God entering the Garden to fellowship with Adam and Eve (Gen 3:8). Walking is also a Biblical image of communion, fellowship or intimacy, a way of life (Rom 6:4; 8:4; 2 Cor 5:7; Gal 5:16, 25; Eph 2:10; 4:1; 5:2; Col 1:10; 2:6; 1 Thess 2:12; 4:11; 1 Jn 1:7; 2 Jn 1:3, 4; Rev 3:4). The grammar of Enoch’s walk was continual; he lived in constant fellowship with God. II. Enoch the Prophet (Jude 1:14-16). Enoch was the first prophet in history, preaching a message of God’s judgment of sinners at the coming of the Lord. The preaching of the gospel – man’s sin, God’s salvation through faith in Jesus – is neither popular nor about how many converts we make. It’s about faithfulness to God. We labor faithfully for God and leave the result of ministry to Him (1 Cor 3:6-7). III. Enoch was Translated (Gen 5:24). As Enoch walked in fellowship with God, something unexplained and unexplainable happened. Though a sinner like every other descendant of Adam, Enoch didn’t die because God took him. Hebrews 11:5-6 says that By faith Enoch was translated so that he did not see death. The word "translated", used three times in verse 5, means to change sides, to be put into another place. Enoch walked by faith and God moved him from mortality to immortality, from man’s realm to God’s realm, from Earth to Heaven. He was alive and living by faith, and suddenly he vanished to Heaven. All who walk with God will experience what happened with Enoch, as God makes a people for His presence, in His place, and for His pleasure and praise. Paul explained this in First Corinthians 15:50-58. God’s promise is that all who trust in Jesus to save them from sin and death will be translated to Heaven. God may translate His people to His place in Heaven by way of death or by rapture as Jesus returns in the clouds to take His bride to His side (1 Thess 4:16-17). Either way, God will move His people from earth to eternity in His Foreverland. The means of His translation isn’t important, but that you walk with Jesus through saving faith.
