The story of Christoph Sauser and his participation and success in the Absa Cape Epic. In 2004 Christoph Sauser first heard about the Cape Epic from friend and teammate Fredrik Kessiakoff. The Swedish professional told him about this race across South Africa with wild animals and amazing landscapes and Christoph thought: “Hmm, that might be a nice trip?” Soon after that conversation with Kessiakoff he was to take on the Untamed African MTB race, a decision that put his stellar sporting career onto an entirely new trajectory. At the time Susi, as he is affectionately known to his teammates and rivals, was busy…becoming the overall Cross Country World Cup series winner for the year, a feat he was to repeat in 2005. Susi had already claimed a 2000 Olympic Games Cross Country bronze medal among his vast collection of awards, and was to go on to win the Cross Country World Championship race itself in 2008, in addition he won the Marathon World Championships in 2007, 2011 and 2013. His participation in the Absa Cape Epic saw the birth of not only an extended racing career but a deep-seated love for South Africa and the creation of a charity. Little did he know at the time that the growth of this small race at the tip of Africa would parallel his own growth as a professional racer.
