Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is situated in the northern part of Kenya. The southern boundary is the Ewaso Ng'iro River and the eastern boundary is the A2 National tar road running from Nairobi to Marsabit and Ethiopia. Samburu National Reserve is 165 Square kilometres in area. On the southern side of Samburu National reserve is Buffalo Springs National Reserve and in the east Shaba National Reserve. The area is also surrounded by several conservancies which can also be visited. We visited Buffalo Springs after spending three days in Samburu. Part 2 is the video of the Buffalo Springs Reserve. The special five animals in this area are the Grevy's Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and Beisa Oryx. We stayed at the Sopa Samburu Lodge which is near the center of the park, away from the river. Most of the lodges are situated along the river. In the dry season many of the animals move closer to the river. We flew from Wilson Airport in Nairobi and landed at Kalama airstrip which is just outside on the eastern side of Samburu Reserve. The bird life in Samburu is exceptional and we saw many of new birds that I'd never seen before. Wildlife viewing is also very good and close up views of the approximately 900 elephants elephants as they are everywhere. Large predators such as lion, leopard and cheetah can be seen but we were unfortunately not able to find any cheetah due to the surface water all over the reserve and the abundant vegetation. Due to water being everywhere the animals were not restricted along the river as they are in the dry season. Wild dogs are also often seen but we were unfortunate not to see any. Our trip was arranged by Seremara Safaris which were excellent and arranged everything including the flight from Wilson airport in Nairobi, because we didn't want to do the 4 1/2 hour, drive so we flew into Kalama Airfield and transferred to the reserve from there. Our guide and driver Jackson Maina was very knowledgeable on wildlife and birds especially.
