Melilla: Spain’s Hidden City in Africa I took the ferry from Málaga to Melilla — a Spanish city that sits on the African coast, right next to Morocco. The voyage was about six hours long. I arrived late, in the rain, and checked into Hotel Ánfora. €55 a night. Basic, but great location. The next day I explored the city on foot. Parque Hernández in the center was peaceful. The seafront was wide open and relaxing. Stray cats ruled the trails in Parque Juan Carlos I, and the old fortress — Melilla la Vieja — was the jewel in the crown. There’s a hidden beach below it called Galápagos Cove that felt like something from a film. Two small museums added context: one focused on the city's Jewish and Berber history, the other filled with archaeological finds — pottery, tools, old maps. Nearby, I found an old underground cistern system from the 1500s, still intact beneath the city. By the next morning, I was on a flight to the Canary Islands. But this place left an impression — a city on the edge, both European and African, shaped by history and geography in equal measure. #melilla #spaintravel #spanishhistory #travel
