Ever hit a rogue rock and found a gash in your ski or snowboard base? Don’t panic. Fixing a core shot with P-Tex is easier than you might think, and this video by Gearhead Kendall, shows you exactly how to do it from the comfort of your garage. ➡️ Ski/Snowboard Tuning Accessories: https://www.backcountry.com/cat/tunin... What You'll Need: ✅ P-Tex Stick (clear or black, depending on your base color) ✅ Sharp Razor Blade (extendable types work best for precision) ✅ Metal Scraper (better than plastic for P-Tex work) ✅ Base Cleaner or Isopropyl Alcohol ✅ Rubber Band (to hold ski brakes out of the way) ✅ Lighter (for melting P-Tex) ✅ Waxing Brush (optional, for finishing) Step-by-Step Instructions: 1. Prepare Your Workspace: Start by locking your ski brakes out of the way using a rubber band or locking mechanism if you have touring bindings. Clean the damaged area with base cleaner or alcohol to remove dirt and grime. 2. Assess and Prep the Damage: Examine the core shot. For a smooth repair, trim away any loose or raised base material with a razor blade. Then, score the damaged area lightly to create texture for the P-Tex to adhere better. 3. Apply the P-Tex: Light your P-Tex stick, holding the tip at the blue part of the flame for optimal heat. Once it starts dripping, you can ditch the lighter, then fill the gouge generously, ensuring slight overflow to allow for even leveling in the next step. Repeat this step as needed, letting the P-Tex dry fully between layers. 4. Scrape and Level: After the P-Tex has dried, use a metal scraper to remove excess material. Apply even pressure and scrape from tip to tail to keep the base smooth. For detailed finishing, use the razor blade to refine uneven spots. 5. Smooth and Wax: Run a waxing brush from tip to tail to further smooth the repaired area. A final hand wax will help the P-Tex bond better and prevent it from peeling off, especially if you plan to apply climbing skins. Tips for Success: ✅Use proper ventilation to avoid inhaling harmful fumes. ✅For larger core shots, consider multiple P-Tex layers for better coverage. ✅If your repair doesn’t hold, visit a professional ski shop for a base weld or tune-up.
