Replacement of Insulators on Kitimat/Kemano Valley Transmission Lines project involves hanging approximately 80,000 units of deadend and suspension insulators on double circuit and single circuit 287kV transmission lines that feed an aluminum smelter. This work is being conducted under energized conditions. The mountainous terrain requires helicopter-only access for a majority of structures as the line crosses some of the most rugged mountain territory in British Columbia. Extreme weather conditions require careful scheduling and coordination in order to successfully complete work in short seasons. Unique catenary transmission structures, the only such structures in the world, were built in high alpine passes in response to repeated destruction of traditional transmission towers by avalanches. The catenaries do not have ground anchoring but are instead suspended from adjacent rock faces, making them accessible only by helicopter. Unique aluminum structures which also appear throughout RTA’s transmission system required the development of specialized tools and work methods in order to complete the work. Allteck developed specialized yokes to complete insulator changes as these aluminum structures and associated hardware assemblies do not allow for the use of traditional hot stick work.
