Treatment with dental implants is increasingly seen as the golden standard for replacing missing teeth, as thanks to research and development of decades, we can today offer safe and effective treatments to a large patient pool. Nevertheless, there remain a significant amount of contraindications and risks associated with implant treatments, even in the most sophisticated practice environments. Much of the complications and long term problems we witness in implant treatments can be attributed to improper treatment planning and patient selection. Decision making in such a a dynamic and rapidly changing practice environment makes requires a comprehensive understanding of both restorative and surgical aspects of implant therapy, as well as how implants would optimally fit in a comprehensive patient care. This seminar will review the fundamental restorative and surgical principles of implant treatment and how they can guide our decision making and treatment planning. The seminar will use latest research evidence and attempt to translate research findings into up to date treatment strategies, which can help clinicians to make well informed decisions on day-to-day clinical scenarios.
