The History: Arlberg's Rotschrofenbahn is a Doppelmayr double chairlift that was installed in 1993 to replace a T-Bar. It serves two trails above the village of Oberlech. The terrain can be skied from the top of the Steinmähderbahn, but it is easier to ride this lift. Even though this lift sees little use, it is planned to be replaced either next season or the following season with a new Doppelmayr D-Line detachable high-speed six pack. Again, unnecessary, but that's a theme with European lifts. As it stands, this seems to be the fastest fixed grip lift I have ever ridden (it is sped up a bit half way through the ride). The Lift: The Rotschrofenbahn is a fairly standard European Doppelmayr fixed-grip chairlift. It utilizes a bottom drive terminal with a loading conveyor, a top monopod return, and Doppelmayr EJ bail carriers, although they are slightly different from the ones we received in North America. Doppelmayr lifting frames and line gear are also present. As I mentioned, this is arguably the fastest fixed-grip chairlift I have ever ridden (it gets sped up even more towards the end of the video). It likely runs at ~550 ft/min even though it technically has a design speed of 500 ft/min. Capacity is rated at 1,438 p/h. The beginning of this lift is actually pretty cool as it descends into a small valley. I suspect the T-Bar it replaced began after this valley.
