Matmora Trailhead, Delpen Hike https://maps.app.goo.gl/gJo1bKh85bf1X... If when you reach the Deplen trail end you can continue on if you are up to it and do the Matmora peak. Matmora, located on Austvågøy in eastern Lofoten, is among the most stunning ridge hikes in the region, offering breathtaking panoramic views from several iconic lookout points. The narrow, winding ridge of Matmora provides some of Lofoten’s most celebrated scenery, with clear trails that remain easy to follow, even as they meander through diverse landscapes. However, this hike is quite lengthy by Lofoten standards, so it’s essential to be prepared. Since the summit is often cloaked in low clouds even in summer, checking the weather forecast before setting out is advised. So how can you get to the trail head. Well to reach Matmora’s trailhead, start from Svolvær and follow the E10 for 16 kilometers east before turning left onto Fv888 toward Laukvik. Continue for 17 kilometers until you near the coastline, where the road splits. Take the right turn toward Fiskebøl and continue for another 2 kilometers until you see a parking area on your right near Delp, clearly marked with a signpost for Matmora. As far as the hike goes I can say that the hike trail begins behind the parking lot; pass through a gate and follow a well-worn path up the forested hillside. At around 300 meters in elevation, the trees thin out, and you reach the broad plateau known as Delpen (or Gjersvollheia), covered in heather and grasses. On a clear day, the plateau offers views of the prominent summit cairn of Matmora, almost directly south along the ridge. Several trail options branch out across the plateau. Head south along the main trail, veering slightly west as you approach the 529-meter-high point, marked by a cairn. This is a great spot for a brief rest and to take in the views. You can choose to skip this high point by following an alternate path on the left side of the ridge, which avoids extra elevation. As you continue, the ridge narrows, and the hike becomes more adventurous. The main ridge of Matmora soon rises ahead. Following the primary trail along the ridge is the most scenic route, although several side trails bypass some high points for a less challenging option. As you climb, there are some narrow, exposed sections, but the trail remains visible. Snow patches can linger into early summer, potentially adding difficulty to certain sections. As the ridge nears the summit, it flattens, and the ascent eases. Just when it seems there might be further to go, the summit cairn appears. The peak itself is rocky and relatively exposed, with rewarding 360-degree views of the surrounding fjords, mountain ranges, and islands. For your descent you have the option to choose an alternative route. For those looking to explore further, it’s possible to descend on the opposite side of the mountain into Rangeldalen and return to Fv888, adding a new perspective to the hike. However, this route adds an extra 6-kilometer walk along the road back to Delp, so be prepared. So about the camping options. While the rocky summit of Matmora is not ideal for camping, some camping spots are located lower down along the ridge. The Delpen plateau also offers flat, grassy areas, making it a popular camping choice to avoid carrying gear to the summit. Overall, Matmora is a fantastic introduction to ridge hiking in Lofoten, offering unforgettable scenery and a well-defined trail with options for more or less strenuous routes, depending on your preference.
