Many people misunderstand the Quran’s stance on adultery, assuming it prescribes stoning, when in fact the Quran itself makes no mention of that punishment. Dr. Shabir Ally unpacks this misconception by pointing to the clear verse that mandates one hundred lashes for both male and female adulterers. He explains how stoning likely entered Islamic thought through earlier practices of the Prophet before the revelation of this verse, or through Jewish law at the time, and how later scholars tried to reconcile Quran and hadith by assigning flogging to the unmarried and stoning to the married. But Dr. Shabir stresses that this approach elevates hadith (collected and written down much later with less certainty) above the Quran, which is problematic. Since the Quran’s wording is unambiguous and universal, he concludes that the punishment it sets is flogging alone, and the widespread belief in stoning stems from a historical misstep that wrongly overshadowed the Quran’s clear teaching.
