Process: 1- Warm-Up: Begin by getting the students moving to a steady beat. One helpful idea is to prepare a set of action cards (snap, clap, pat, jump, etc.) and show them one at a time. Students respond by performing that action on every beat. After 8–16 beats, switch to a new action. This keeps the beat practice engaging and helps them feel the beat with their whole bodies. 2- Introducing the Anacrusis (Pickup Notes). Explain that not all music starts on the first beat, sometimes there’s a little lead-in note before the downbeat. In music terms, this is called anacrusis, an upbeat or pick-up note. To make this concept concrete, demonstrate with a simple known song or phrase: “Happy Birthday” – point out that the word “Happy” comes just before the “strong beat” on “Birth-”. 3- Practice the rhythm starting in the anacrusis: ti-ti | ta ta ta ti-ti | ta ta ta :|| Clap, use words/speech to reinforce the rhythm. You could say: short short | long long long short short | long long long :|| OR Burgers | fries fries fries burgers | fries fries fries :|| or anything else that matches the rhythm. 4- Movement- Ensemble: Jumping in Small Groups: Divide the class into small groups to reduce waiting time. One group will jump while the other will play the xylophones. We played a melodic ostinato but you can create your own with your students. Movers start to jump the rhythm and can sing at the same time when comfortable (C B A A A A B E E E ) Body Percussion Posters: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/P...
