I'm a surgical oncologist at UVA Health. I'm a surgical oncologist, which is a cancer surgeon. I am part of a multidisciplinary team of doctors that treat patients with diverse array of cancers. During my medical education at Boston University, some of my mentors engaged in a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, and that really interested me. To be part of a team of doctors as opposed to just an individual doctor taking care of a patient, especially with something as important as cancer treatment, that's what really drove me to the specialty. UVA Health has been very unique. Most academic referral centers want patients to be brought to their main campus, but UVA's initiative to push surgical sub-specialists out to the community setting is what sets us apart. It's real important to be able to listen to a patient and give them time to really express what they've been going through. And it allows us as physicians to really understand and empathize with what the challenges are and can help us direct the aspects of multidisciplinary care that will best serve the patient.
