My first tournament had 26 participants, my next one had a few over 50. I was expecting around 75 max but was shocked to see 100 people registering to fish! Thankfully the perimeter of the lake is almost 2 miles and there are plenty of bank fishing spots around the area, so while the draw was big there was plenty of room for everyone to fish. I was impressed to see a wide variety of anglers ranging from kids 7 years old, teen bass fishing fanatics, couples who joined for a relaxing day on the water, and older fishermen looking to test their finely honed skills against the young up-and-coming generation. The conditions were absolutely perfect for bass fishing, overcast skies with a moderate about of wind. I almost wished I wasn't hosting the tournament so I could fish all day myself :P If I was fishing the tournament I would've started with a spook in the morning bombing casts along grassy flats fishing water that other anglers couldn't reach. Then I would've covered as much water as possible casting under hard-to-reach branches and other cover with a spinnerbait when the wind picked up past 8 mph. Interestingly, all of the anglers except for third place (who caught his on a frog) used soft plastics on the bottom to catch their fish. I saw anglers throwing moving baits and topwaters, but the crazy amount of fishing pressure may have killed the moving bait bite. With first place getting a 5 lber and second with an almost 4.5 lbers, I can't argue against their tactics. The tournament started off relatively slow, with only 1 fish weighing one pound weighed in the first hour. That quickly changed when Colby weighed in a beautiful 3.25 lb bass caught on a frog in the matted grass below the dam. My personal best lake elkhorn bass actually came from the same area on the same type of bait. My buddy who used to religiously fish Elkhorn practically everyday after school once told me about a time when he pulled out two 5 lb bass on consecutive casts below the dam area. After that 3 lb chunk no other really impressive fish were caught for a few hours, but a lot of 1-1.5 lb class bass were caught all around the lake, most of them coming on senkos. I sure got my exercise for the day making 6 complete loops around the lake (almost 12 miles total) weighing in a ton of fish. The wind started to pick up around 10 am and before long the hawgs started to bite. I weighed in the tournament winning fish, a 5 lber around 11 am that was caught on a powerbait worm next to a creek where there were an abundance of minnows.
