Arankale not far from Kurunegala is a rarely visited heritage site. In the early Anuradhapura period, it was the forest hermitage of a famous Buddhist saint, the Arhat Maliyadewa. In the late Anuradhapura period, it became a typical monastery of the enigmatic group of Pamsukulika monks. Arankale is the classic example of a so-called forest monastery from the Anuradhapura period. Those monks who found monastic life in the large monasteries of urban settlements to be too secular retreated into such forest refuges.
