Sega has finally released a new Shinobi game after almost 14 years, with the previous game in the series being Shinobi 3DS. Millions of Fortnite fans have been born and raised in that time frame, so we were overdue for a new entry in this classic series. Art of Vengeance retains a lot of the previous Shinobi skills and abilities, while "modernizing" it for today's audience by making it more of a Metroidvania, with lots of optional upgrades and secrets to find. I'm not a fan of that. It creates a lot of dead air and down time, BUT, you do unlock an Arcade mode after finishing the story that lets you minimize the fluff. That's what I'm playing in this video, but Arcade mode has some issues of its own. One of the biggest annoyances for me is how the last stage isn't replayable at all after you finish it. It's not playable in Arcade mode, and the boss doesn't respawn in Story mode. If you want to play it again, you have to replay the entire game. That's what I had to do here just so I could include the final level in this video. So since I was running through everything again, I tried to include all of the story and cutscenes in between stages, which you can also never view again after you've seen them once. Is it just me or is that kinda ridiculous? The same goes for the secret boss, which you can fight after collecting all of the lab keys, but at least he's fightable in Arcade mode (I would think, I never tried). I didn't know I could execute him, though, so I just went straight through with the kill... I wasn't sure if it had already saved, so I didn't want to quit out and see if I could retry. Sucks, but you only get one shot. Do not miss your chance to blow. But with my main annoyances out of the way, this is still a very good game. Combat is very fun, and the movement mechanics flow like butter. Moving through each stage feels great when you're mixing up all of your options to go as fast as you can. The game has beautiful art and graphics, a good soundtrack, and while the base level of difficulty is pretty low, getting all of the S-ranks in Arcade mode provides a satisfying challenge for the people who are looking for one. Even with the two accessories I used - a shield that absorbs one hit and respawns after 60 seconds, and the Berserker talisman that increases your damage output based on how high your hit count is - some stages are pretty hard to get through without taking a hit (assuming you don't just sit around waiting for your shield to recharge like a baby). You can take it a lot further, too, by doing all of the optional fights, and going through all of the secret areas to get green coins. I skipped most of that because NOTHING about the scoring in this game is transparent. How much are the time, kills, hit count, and all of the optional challenges worth? Will you end up with less points if you sacrifice time to go around collecting and fighting everything? Who knows! What I do know is that going through a stage without taking damage essentially guarantees an S-rank, so that's what I prioritized above all else. I still assume it's better to do everything for the highest score, in which case, it could be fun to maximize. The S-rank itself generally isn't that difficult, aside from a couple of stages. So yeah, the game's fun, and there's challenge for those who want it. I wish it was more of a linear action game, but those don't sell as well nowadays, so I can understand why they'd go with a more popular genre. The Metroid downtime usually doesn't bog the game down too much, but there are several areas that just feel like a waste of time. I still enjoyed it, and I put a lot of time into it (50+ hours between my save files, though I leave it idle a lot when I take breaks), so I'd say it's worth the $29.99. You can find it cheaper on PC if you buy from sites like Fanatical or 2Game too. I don't think it'll end up being my favorite Shinobi game, and it's definitely not my favorite ninja game of 2025, but it's well worth playing. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, and Switch (but with no Switch 2 upgrade yet!), so you can probably play it if you're interested. I played on Steam, which has high framerate support. It feels great playing at 240 fps. 0:00 Intro 1:34 Oboro Village 12:08 The Chase 16:13 Lantern Festival 27:19 The Mountain 48:11 Neo City 1:03:50 Fish Market 1:16:48 Submarine Base 1:34:55 Riptide 1:39:44 The Desert 1:57:13 Mad Train 2:04:45 ENE Corp Laboratory 2:18:45 The Kaiju 2:34:11 The Assault 2:48:19 Ruse's Limbo 2:54:30 Ending & Credits 2:58:51 Secret Boss (Shadow Master) ----- Beat 'em Ups (e.g. Final Fight): • Beat 'em Ups 2D Action (e.g. Metal Slug): • 2D Action STG/Shmups (e.g. Dodonpachi): • STG Replays
