Mlei Ngyi (or Mileinyi) is a major, week-long festival of the Zeliang Naga tribe in Nagaland, marking the beginning of the new farming season and purification of oneself. It is a "Festival of Fire" celebrated with traditional rituals, including lighting a new flame, community feasts, traditional dances, and games. Key Features of Mlei Ngyi Festival: Significance: It serves to invoke God’s blessings for good health, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest for the upcoming agricultural year. The Sacred Fire (Mlei-Teu): The clan headman (kizeu-pei) lights a sacred, new fire using traditional bamboo friction methods (mlei-ria), which is kept burning throughout the celebration. Purification & Preparation: It is a time for self-cleansing and purification. The festival also involves treating seeds for healthy, productive farming. Customs & Celebration: The celebration involves community dancing (Helim), ululation (Nroh), traditional games, and merry-making. Social Bonds: Traditionally spanning six days, it includes social rituals where brides and grooms are invited to their in-laws for dinners and blessings. It serves as a crucial time for the Zeliang community to honor their ancestors, strengthen social cohesion, and prepare for the Jhum cultivation season.
