This past winter, I removed the turf from this portion of my backyard and spread a native wildflower seed mix! I wasn't expecting many blooms during the first year, since most native perennials take a year or so to get established before putting out any flowers. So I was pleasantly surprised to see two perennials blooming already - the oxeye sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides) and black-eyed susans (Rudbeckia hirta). Partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata), a native annual, is also blooming! I've been managing the space mostly by just pulling weeds at this point. There's a good amount of non-native grass that I have to focus on removing over the remainder of the growing season and into the winter. There's also a lot of Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) that came up, and in order to prevent this from becoming a pokeweed monoculture, I've been removing it. I leave lots of pokeweed around my backyard for the wildlife anyway! The wildflower seed mix came from Ernst Conservation Seeds. If you're in PA or in bordering states, check them out for a great variety of 100% native seed mixes! #wildflowers #wildflower #meadow #nativeplants #native #plants #gardening #lawnremoval #lawn #turf #nonnative #invasive #flowers #seeds #nativeseed
